The Other Limbs

The practice of yoga has the potential to be immensely healing on all levels. The most practiced form of yoga today is hatha yoga and the physical postures. Keeping the body healthy and strong and further sensitizing ourselves to our internal experiences is a crucial part of our overall well being but it is  just one limb of an eight limb system. If we simply practice asana alone the whole point of yoga can get obscured. To build a strong foundation of yogic understanding, further study of yogic texts is an important addition to practice. Though continued study we deepen our experiential understanding of the yogic teachings The inclusion of Yogic textual study  like The Patanjali Yoga Sutras and The Bhagavad Gita, we begin to understand the relevance of these teachings in our day to day lives and can incorporate and apply that understanding, gaining deeper insight and Self understanding.. This is where the magic of yoga lives.

Traditional Chanting

I teach Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras in the same ‘srutiparampara’ tradition that I learned with her teacher M.A.Jayashree. This is the traditional oral call and response learning. where the sutras are broken down and repeated until proficiency is reached. Chanitng opens us up to the essence of the yogic teachings and helps to cultivate what is known in sanskrit as Bhavana, the cultivation of a calm, equanimous mind.

Philosophy Study

Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras are a spiritual psychology that help provide us with a strong understanding of the aim of yoga. These timeless teachings hold worlds of wisdom that can be an invaluable tool in our search for Self understanding. We begin by breaking down the words and then chanting the verse over and over again. The second part of the group is spent translating and discussing a few sutras and further illuminating their relevance in our everyday lives.
